In these videos I perform repetitive physical gestures to conjure the generative tension between privacy and voyeurism, risk and safety, my gaze and your gaze. In 2021, I had a surgery that had traumatic complications of extreme blood loss, pain, and mental dissociation, and I underwent common symptoms of a near-death experience. As I recovered, I wondered how the presence of a camera could help mediate my relationship to my body. I began sitting in front of the camera for a longer period of time, filming myself performing these repetitive physically intense gestures, and observing my internal feedback loop between the physical sensations and my mental response. What happens when I perform these actions on myself, and what happens when I perform them for a viewer? What new neural and physical pathways can I create? What happens to me in my body, and what happens to you? What happens when my gaze meets your gaze?
